A senior journalist and employees member of the Rivers State Broadcasting Company, Port Harcourt, Mrs. Priestba Nwokocha, was kidnapped by armed males on Friday evening.
Mrs. Nwokocha, who’s the Director of Information on the company, popularly referred to as ‘Radio Rivers’, was allegedly taken away by armed males on Friday evening on the Ogonigba/Elelenwo bridge resulting in the previous slaughter market in Obio/Akpor Native Authorities Space.
Though particulars of the kidnapping have been sketchy at press time, the management of the Nigerian Union of Journalists within the state confirmed the incident.
In the meantime, the police within the state mentioned they’ve launched a manhunt to make sure that Nwokocha is launched unhurt and that the suspects are arrested.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer within the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying investigations had begun to arrest the suspects and make sure the rescue of the journalist.
Iringe-Koko, the Superintendent of Police, mentioned: “Sure, the incident occurred and we (the police) have began investigations to make sure that the lady is launched and reunited together with her household.
“As I communicate to you, the Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonji, has ordered a tactical crew to make sure that the suspects are arrested and dropped at justice.”
In a press release collectively signed by its President Stanley Job and Secretary Ike Wigodo, the NUJ condemned the act and described it as vicious and callous.
The assertion mentioned that she was taken by armed males suspected to be kidnappers on Friday night.
It added: “She was kidnapped at gunpoint about 8pm after the completion of works alongside the Ogonigba/Elelenwo bridge resulting in the previous slaughter market in Obio/Akpor Native Authorities Space of Rivers State.”
NUJ praised the police commissioner for bettering the safety state of affairs within the state within the final three months, urging him to not relent.
